Sewing Thread:
In textile thread is known as a long filament of yarn, which is the major element for holding fabrics together. We know that, sewing is the action of needle and thread into the fabric. Sewing thread is an important part of sewing operation in the garments industry. In apparel industry sewing thread is considered as the main accessory for manufacturing process. Now I want to say something about sewing threads and their selection criteria in the apparel industry.
Sewing Thread Selection in Garments:
There are different types of sewing threads in garments such as cotton thread, polyester thread, heavy duty-thread, silk thread, wool thread, metallic thread, designer thread, etc. Those threads are used in garments according to the hue and shade matching, fabric structure, density, appearance, thickness etc. Proper selection of sewing thread in garments are essential for smooth order execution. Following factor should be considered before sewing thread selection in the sewing floor of a garments industry.
1. Construction:
Following construction must be considered before sewing operation
- Sewing thread count or ticket number
- No of ply
- TPI in sewing thread
- Thread strength
- Thread elongation
2. Sewing ability:
In garments industry, maintain few steps for finding out accurate sewing ability. At first sort out three sewing thread package from a lot randomly. Then 100 yard length of fabric is sewn with an individual thread package with standard sewing speed. Then sewing quality of the sewing thread is evaluated.
3. Finish:
Sewing thread finish depends on sewing performance, fabric structure, the number of operation, etc. Sewing thread should contain finish in the range of 3 to 15 %. This sewing thread finish is an important factor in the thread wastage reduction.
4. Color:
Thread color is an important factor for sewing thread selection in the garment industry. Proper color and shade should be matched with the main fabric. Normally the buyer provides all the thread color code according to the fabric color.
5. Package Density:
Sewing thread density in all packages should be same. Otherwise sewing may be reduced. Therefore, to ensure package density matching according to the fabric density is another important task before sewing operation in garments.
6. Winding:
Sewing thread should be wound properly in the package. Otherwise, it may create problem during unwinding while sewing. Which may be reduced sewing ability in sewing floor in garments.
7. Yardage Calculation:
The length variation in the sewing thread package may be up to 2% of the mentioned length in the package. Excess length of sewing thread package may be increased wastage of sewing thread which also increase production cost. So careful about this matter before sewing operation in garments.
